Toledo Architects at the Ohio Statehouse: Advocacy in Action

On March 6, 2024, AIA Toledo was proudly represented by Andy Knopp, AIA (AIA Ohio Director), and Bob Siebenaller, AIA, during a visit to the Ohio State House. Their purpose was to engage with Senators and Representatives for meaningful discussions.

Representative Gail Pavliga and Representative James Hoops participated in a panel discussion on affordable housing and Karen Kasler, Bureau Chief, Ohio Statehouse News Bureau provided an insider’s take on the Ohio Statehouse to AIA delegates from across the State.

With one-on-one visits with Senator Theresa Gavarone (SD 2), Representative Elgin Rogers, Jr. (HD 44), and Representative Michelle Grimm (HD 43) we asked for their support of the following:

  • Maintain expanded funding of Ohio Historic Tax Credits

  • Expansion of Affordable Housing Opportunities

  • Support of Sensible Residential Building Codes through an exemption to Senate Bill 9

Following the meetings, a tour of the Capitol was conducted by Luther Liggett, AIA Ohio Lobbyist, where the AIA Ohio attendees received a behind the scenes history lesson on its construction and the artwork that adorns the halls. The day ended with an informal reception for the legislators and their aides.

The essence of the daylong event was conveyed by Representatives Pavliga and Hoops: legislators not only desire but also require input from their constituents. Take action by composing a letter or providing in-person testimony during hearings.

We hope you’ll get involved in AIA’s advocacy efforts and consider a contribution to the AIA Ohio PAC.
