Reflections from the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design

Inspiration, Connection, and Representation

Written by Isabel Souza, Associate AIA

Attending the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design for the second time was just as energizing as my first experience. This year felt especially meaningful, as I had the privilege of representing the AIA Toledo Chapter Board of Directors and our Emerging Professionals on a national stage.

Alongside Chapter President Jake Miley, AIA, NCARB, and Heather Judge, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, I served as a Delegate at the Annual Business Meeting. It was a milestone in my career and a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry in shaping the future of our profession. Together, we voted on national leadership, reviewed proposed bylaw amendments, and considered key resolutions—critical steps that guide the direction of the Institute.

Throughout the conference, I attended inspiring sessions and engaged in meaningful conversations that sparked deep reflection. A major theme this year was the growing role of artificial intelligence in our industry. While no single session could capture its full impact, I left with fresh insights and a renewed curiosity to continue exploring how AI will shape our work. This is what I love about the AIA Conference: each conversation, session, and connection ignites new ideas that fuel meaningful action when we return to our offices and communities.

One standout moment was the closing keynote by Dami Lee, “Transforming Architecture Through Digital Storytelling.” Her call to “make architecture human” has stayed with me—a powerful reminder to communicate design with clarity and empathy in a fast-paced, fragmented world.

Beyond the sessions, the people are what make the AIA Conference truly special. Each year, I reconnect with friends, mentors, and colleagues while meeting new faces from across the country and around the world. From impromptu hallway conversations to the vibrant international presence, the conference underscores that architecture is, at its core, a human-centered profession—and the relationships we build are as essential as the spaces we create.

This year, I also had the honor of celebrating mentors recognized for their leadership and contributions at the AIA Gala Awards, a moving and inspiring evening. Additionally, I attended the Women’s Leadership Luncheon, where Liz Myers, MS, PCC, delivered the keynote “Playing Win-Win,” sharing tangible strategies for fostering collaboration, trust, and team alignment. The luncheon was more than a gathering—it was a celebration of women’s achievements and a catalyst for continued leadership and growth in our field.

Attending the AIA Conference is a reminder of the power of community, the importance of representation, and the endless opportunities for learning and innovation in architecture. I return home reenergized, inspired, and ready to translate that inspiration into action.

If you’ve ever considered attending the AIA Conference, I encourage you to take the leap. It’s an experience that broadens your perspective and reaffirms why we do what we do—as architects, as leaders, and as people.
