Introducing Open Doors: AIA Toledo’s New Public Education Initiative
AIA Toledo’s Open Doors initiative was developed in collaboration with local member architects and community partners. The program aims to raise public awareness about the process of opening a commercial space, with a focus on supporting new business owners.
Across Northwest Ohio, nearly 70% of permit applications are submitted by individuals who are unfamiliar with the building process. This often results in delays, safety concerns, and added cost, creating significant hurdles for small businesses. Open Doors was created to address these challenges through community forums that feature panel discussions with architects, code officials, and economic development professionals.
The inaugural session was held on November 13, 2025, and brought together 47 attendees. AIA Toledo members Audie Bates, AIA; Erin Curley, AIA; Heather Judge, AIA; Bridget Perino, AIA; and Steve Shrake, AIA led the discussion, highlighting common obstacles related to permitting, leasing, funding, and regulatory compliance. The session underscored the value of involving design professionals early to help entrepreneurs avoid costly missteps and move forward with greater clarity.
Committee members are now evaluating feedback from the debut session and preparing 2026 presentations, along with a companion guidebook. Additional volunteers are welcome. Members interested in contributing to the next phase of Open Doors may contact AIA Toledo.
The debut session brought together economic development professionals and community partners for a full and engaged discussion.
