AIA Small Firm Exchange Spotlights Local Project
Installed within Kokosing Hall’s Innovation Lab at the School of the Built Environment, Bowling Green State University.
AIA’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) recently highlighted The Green World Annex, designed by AIA Toledo member Gerard Nadeau, AIA, as part of its national showcase celebrating small firm design excellence.
The project was conceived as a collaborative construction effort between Architecture and Construction Management students and faculty at Bowling Green State University. The piece commemorated the integration of the previously separated departments into a single building with the completion of the Kokosing Hall addition in the spring of 2023.
Woven from wood slats custom milled from 2x4 pine studs, the 10 foot high, free-standing arbor comprises three conical baskets joined at their crowns to create a continuous, double curved canopy, held together by friction without the use of adhesives or mechanical fasteners. Inspiration for the piece came from the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s play As You Like It.
The Annex received a 2024 Honorable Mention in the AIA Ohio Design Awards.
