Several Northwest Ohio architectural firms were honored for their distinguished work during the biennial Design Awards program, held virtually by the Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects on April 29, 2021.

Projects submitted for consideration by local design firms are evaluated on their individual merits by an independent jury of peers. The Jury considers each project for its resolution of the design vision and contribution to design excellence in the built environment.

The 2021 Design Awards Jury was chaired by Michael Maiese, AIA, an Associate Principal with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, a nationally recognized design firm with offices throughout the United States. Maiese assembled a jury of four additional peers whose work and experiences would bring diverse views and insights to the jury process. They included, Jane Huesemann (Principal Clark / Huesemann Architects), Dana Marinzel (Senior Associate AECOM), Teresa Bucco (Senior Associate AE7), and Mike Guin (Principal Rothchild Doyno Collaborative).

“Our chapter is so fortunate and grateful to build upon our rich history of national jury members dedicating their time and talents to help us celebrate the efforts of our design community in Northwest Ohio,” said Michael Muse, AIA Toledo Honors Committee Chairperson.

This year’s program celebrated twenty-five years of awarding architectural design excellence.  There were fifteen submissions representing seven NW Ohio architectural firms, one entry received an Honor Award and four received Citation Awards.

The expressive "design move" of the roof provides a lot of value and strength glowing like a "Beacon of Hope" within the community. The jury appreciated the history and heritage connections to a patchwork quilt and the nearby park tree canopy as inspirations for the expressive roof form. The tie to site and social impacts of the project makes it conceptually rich.
